The pandemic has been a forced pause in which we’ve had more time to think about what we truly value. Many of us have had opportunities to re-evaluate our most important relationships. And the increased time for reflection makes possible one of the most powerful tools we have: forgiveness.

Holding on to negative feelings after a conflict or misunderstanding at work is naturally going to have an adverse impact. It can lead to disengagement, a lack of collaboration with colleagues, and increased stress. So, forgive yourself for any judgements you’re holding against yourself – and then forgive your judgements of others. Then, look at your life and the day ahead with newness and wonder.

Here are three simple Microsteps to help you practise forgiveness. Which resonates with you?

Each morning, repeat an affirmation that shows compassion for yourself.

Make it simple and declarative: “I am enough”.

Instead of telling yourself ‘I can’t’ do something, switch your language to ‘I don’t’.

This small change will empower you to see that you have choices.

Identify a grudge you’ve been holding onto and let it go as a gift to yourself.

Research shows that forgiving others can reduce our anxiety and stress, and improve overall wellbeing.
