Wonder is at the heart of creativity, and studies show that wonder and awe can improve our well-being.

Research published in the journal Psychological Science found that “experiences of awe bring people into the present moment” and “make life feel more satisfying than it would otherwise”.

So how do we tap into this feeling on a regular basis?

We don’t have to travel far or commit a great deal of time. With Microsteps, we can open ourselves up to small but meaningful experiences that expand our sense of wonder, with all the benefits it brings.

As Thrive Founder and CEO Arianna Huffington writes: “Countless things in our daily lives can awaken the almost constant state of wonder we knew as children. But sometimes to see them we must look through a different set of eyes. The triggers are there. But are we present enough to experience them?”

Here are three simple Microsteps to help unlock experiences of wonder. Which will you try?

Microstep #1: Take a moment to look up next time you step outside.

Every day, allow yourself to take in the wonders around you: the sky, the stars, mountains, clouds. Taking time to appreciate beauty, vastness and mystery has benefits that last long after you’ve stopped looking up!

Microstep #2: Learn at least one new thing each day.

It might be the name of a flower or tree that you pass, the name of a song you hear playing in a café, or one word of a foreign language. Even one small new thing helps keep your mind active and curious.

Microstep #3: Once a day, start a conversation with a colleague who has a different background than you.

Inviting them to share their experiences will help you grow as a person and expand your perspective.
